Lisa HarlanAssistant Superintendent, Lisa Harlan, was awarded the Achievement of Excellence award by the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA). This honor was announced at the 48th Annual COSA Seaside Conference on Thursday, June 23.

“I am honored to receive this award and accept it, really, on behalf of the entire district. Every day we center on kids and advocate for them, especially for those who need it most,” Harlan said.

Harlan has worked for the Greater Albany Public School District since July of 2018. Prior to joining the GAPS community, she served as the Director of Elementary Education for the Salem-Keizer School District. She began her professional career as a high school and middle school Spanish teacher at Corvallis High School and Western View Middle School. She has also worked as the Assistant Principal at Linus Pauling Middle School, the Principal at Cheldelin Middle School, and the Principal at Lincoln Elementary Dual Language School in Corvallis. Her impressive educational leadership experience also includes service as a Director of School Improvement for the Oregon Department of Education.

Harlan earned her B.A. in education from Western Oregon University, her M.Ed. from the University of Oregon, and her administrative licensure from Portland State University.

“She knows almost everything there is to know about education, and if she doesn’t know she’ll find out. She supports and teaches me everyday. This is definitely well-deserved,” said Sue Luthra, Director of Elementary Education.

Harlan has received high praise from colleagues who nominated her for this award. Javier Cervantes, Executive Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, wrote, “I have personally witnessed and experienced her demonstrated fortitude, intelligence, compassion, and care for not only those that report to her, or those that are her colleagues in the district office, but also to the countless professionals that are teaching classes or directing at a building level.” He continued, “I have learned more about leadership and guts and determination in my three months as her colleague than I have in over 20-plus years in all levels of education. Assistant Superintendent, Lisa Harlan is worthy of the Achievement of Excellence Award because that is what she is; excellence personified.”

Focusing on students, Harlan has worked diligently to strengthen the district and the community. Over the last year, Harlan has served on the Strategic Planning Committee and the Policy Rewrite Committee. Additionally, she has stepped in as the temporary Secondary Director of Middle School Education for the school district. Outside of the district, Harlan works closely with Ophelia’s Place, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teen girls make healthy life choices through education and empowerment.

“I am so fortunate to be surrounded by staff who work tirelessly for students, and I am grateful to represent Albany in this way at the state level.” Harlan stated.
